We can't wait to see you in October at Our Moment, Our Momentum: The GW Centuries Celebration Weekend and want to make your visit as smooth as possible. Should you have any questions about getting to or around campus or the National Mall, contact [email protected].
Foggy Bottom is conveniently located in the heart of Washington, D.C., close to three major airports, including Ronald Reagan Washington National, Washington Dulles International and Baltimore Washington International, as well as to Union Station where you can take the bus or train. The Foggy Bottom/GWU Metro stop is located right on campus, with service to the the Orange, Blue and Silver Metro lines.
Another popular way to get anywhere in the city is by bike. You can take advantage of over 4,000 bikes and 500+ bike stations around the District to bike to any of our events. Visit Capital Bikeshare for maps and details on how to access your bike to beat the traffic.
Taxis are available throughout the city. Pricing depends on distance and the number of people.
Parking in GW garages on the Foggy Bottom campus will be available during the GW Centuries Celebration Weekend from Friday, October 1 through Sunday, October 3, though we anticipate high demand. The G St, Elliott School, Science & Engineering Hall, and University Student Center garages will all be open, with a few exceptions:
If GW garages are full, you may also find parking at 2000 Pennsylvania Ave NW (entry on 20th St), 1800 G St NW (entry on 18th St), and 2200 Pennsylvania Ave. NW (entry on 22nd St). If you prefer to park in a garage within walking distance of the National Mall, you can do so at GW Commencement 2021 - Colonial Parking (ecolonial.com).
The day of the University Commencement ceremony, guests can arrive as early as 8:00 a.m. and must be seated before 10:00 a.m. as the academic procession will begin at 10:30 a.m. Figure out how long your trip to the National Mall will take ahead of time and be prepared for crowds and traffic that day.
Parking is extremely limited around the National Mall and we encourage you to use other forms of transportation to Commencement. If you must drive on Commencement day, we encourage you to park your car on the Foggy Bottom campus and make your way to the National Mall via an alternate method, since parking at the National Mall is extremely limited. Please see below for parking information.
The Metro is a great option to get to the National Mall. You can use the Yellow, Green, Orange, Blue and Silver lines. The most convenient exit stations are the Smithsonian Metro Station and Federal Triangle Metro Station. Use Metro’s trip planner and take travel time into consideration. Metro service begins at 7:00 a.m. on Saturday morning. Bikes and taxis also are available, as described above.
We are offering ADA transportation support beginning at 8:30am from the University Student Center parking lot entrance. These smaller size vehicles will offer a more private option, dropping off at the ADA drop off point on the National Mall, closest to ADA seating. The shuttles will return guests immediately after the ceremony to the University Student Center. Please be mindful that the University Student Center parking garage is scheduled to close at 3pm due to the scheduled road closure. If you would like to utilize this source of transportation, please contact Disability Support Services at 202-994-8250 to register. Masks are required to be worn at all times when utilizing GW transportation.
There are many options for lodging across the D.C. area, including some options that are close to the National Mall. Be sure to ask any hotel if they offer a discount for the weekend of GW’s Commencement.
In addition, we have worked with Destination DC to secure blocks of rooms at several hotels for October 1 and October 2. See the hotel list below for details.
The following hotels have reserved blocks of rooms for October 1 and 2, available on a first-come, first-served basis. Please contact the hotels directly with any questions.
